I. Description:
This course is like spring training in Major League Baseball. We will focus on developing the component language skills required to become a professional translator. We will use a variety of methods and tools to practice speaking fluency, pronunciation, listening, reading comprehension, and writing mechanics..
II. Course textbook/resources
There is no textbook for this course. Materials will be posted on the course website and on student blogs. An extensive list of online materials can be found in the ‘Resources’ section of the course website. Sometimes handouts will be provided. Other times, students will be expected to print out materials before class. Students will be required to post assignments in the class Band or on the group website.
III. Instruction Methods:
During ‘Virtual Mode’, we will meet at the designated class time using Zoom Meetings. Check the Eclass site for Meeting links. In class activities will include a variety of written and spoken activities related to translation and interpretation tasks. We will make use of technology when it aids learning. Google Docs will be used by students to keep group notes and Quizlet will be used to practice new vocabulary. Students will sometimes record themselves for the purpose of analysis and feedback.
IV. Grading
Students will be assessed according to the following criteria
There will be regular assignments given through the semester. The midterm and final exams will include a take-home task and an in-class component.
Plagiarism (intentional or not) will have a significantly negative effect on your grade.

I realize that some of you have very full schedules outside of GSIT, but please make every effort to arrive on time. Those arriving more than five minutes late will be marked tardy. Those more than 20 minutes late will be marked absent for that hour. We will sometimes use mobile devices during class, so please try to arrive with a charged phone. Feel free to speak with me (in person or via email) any time you have questions or concerns about this course.
